"Those People," "The Same Difference" Win Audience Awards At NewFest

"it's clear that LGBT audiences continue to seek community through shared experiences onscreen," said NewFest executive director Robert Kushner.

NewFest, New York City's LGBT film festival, just wrapped its 27th anniversary season—which included a gala screening of Todd Haynes' Carol, a master class with Keep the Lights On director Ira Sachs, and even a queer horror marathon with screenings of You’re Killing Me and Everlasting Love.

Moviegoers took it all in, and made their voices known with this years' Audience Awards. The four films honored were:

Those People: Joey Kuhn's depiction of a complicated romance between two young men in high society won the Audience Award for Outstanding Feature Film.

The Same Difference: A look at homophobia and gender discrimination within the African-American lesbian community by documentary filmmaker Nneka Onuorah, took home the Audience Award for Outstanding Documentary Feature. The film also broke NewFest records—selling out four screenings, each followed with lively panel discussions.

Tremulo: Roberto Fiesco won the Audience Award for Outstanding Narrative Short with his tale of a tender but brief encounter between two young men in Mexico.

In the Hollow: This doc short from Austin Bunn (Kill Your Darlings), which recounts a horrific crime against two gay women, won the Audience Award for Outstanding Documentary Short.

Other films praised by NewFest programmers included Martin Edralin's short Hole and Blair Fukumura's documentary short Bedding Andrew.

“As a new generation of filmmakers comes through with exciting new stories and means of telling them, it's clear that LGBT audiences continue to seek community through shared experiences onscreen," said NewFest Executive Director Robert Kushner. "We're extraordinarily happy that NewFest can play a role in that.”
