Three Dallas Gay Bars Attacked Overnight, Community Faces Increased Violent Attacks

"This wasn't some back alley, some dark side street... hundreds of people walk that strip."

Three adjacent gay bars in Dallas were vandalized last night: Woody’s, Jr’s Bar and Grill and the Mining Company—all along on Cedar Springs Road —had their front doors smashed in.

The company that manages all three establishments says it doesn’t believe the attacks were a hate crime, but more likely the work of a disgruntled bar patron who has been banned from several bars in the area.

Police are investigating the incidents as criminal mischief.

Cedar Springs is the heart of Dallas' gay community, which has been victimized by several brutal gay-bashings in recent weeks.

A 29-year-old gay man was attacked on September 20 after the Alan Ross Texas Freedom parade, Dallas' annual Pride parade.

The victim says four men assaulted him "with their hands, feet and a baseball bat" as they yelled anti-gay slurs. He was hospitalized with a fractured skull and numerous cuts and bruises.

On September 30, Jaime Dominguez was attacked as he was leaving a bar on Cedar Springs at around 1am. Dominguez was stabbed multiple times, hit on the back of his head and knocked unconscious.

"This wasn't some back alley, some dark side street," he says. "This was on the strip. Hundreds of people walk that strip. It literally could happen to anybody."

Dallas' NBC 5 is also reporting a third attack in Cedar Springs on October 2.

Bar managers adding security patrols this weekend, and residents say they've met with the Dallas police to discuss safety.

"The level of violence, the homophobic language that's been used in some of them, that's giving our community cause for concern," said LGBT activist Daniel Cates.

"We think these attackers are trying to send a message, and we want them to know that message has been received," he added. "The LBGT community of Dallas and of the United States are not weak, and we will stand up for ourselves and make sure our community is safe."
