Cher Praises Adam Rippon's Oscars Harness, Calls Him "Very Brave," In Heartfelt Time 100 Essay
Time magazine has released this year's 100 Most Influential People list, including more LGBT activist, artists, and public figures than ever before.
Featured on the lineup is gay Olympian Adam Rippon, whose entry was penned by none other than Cher. The diva praised Rippon's "humility, grace and incredible sense of humor" and called him "very brave" for daring to be different.
When I was young, I had no role models—everyone looked like Sandra Dee and Doris Day. There was nobody who made me think, Oh, I could be like them. They represent me. Adam shows people that if you put blood, sweat and tears into what you’re doing, you can achieve something that’s special. You can be special. And I think that’s very brave.
Cher also praised Rippon for taking a fashion risk at the Oscars, something she knows a little something about.
"You could see in the leather-harness suit he wore to the Academy Awards that he isn’t afraid to take chances," she wrote. "It wasn’t about the suit, really. It was about the fact that he dares to be different in a world where being different always comes with a cost. I thought it was fabulous, of course."
While last year's list featured three out LGBT public figures, 2018's lineup included more than a dozen, including bisexual Parkland shooting survivor Emma González, trans actress Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman); gay journalist Ronan Farrow; queer painter Kehinde Wiley; and out Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar.
More controversial names also made the list, including actress Roseanne Barr and President Donald Trump.
Released annually, the Time 100 offers a look at the most talked-about people around the world in a given year. The 2018 list was broken down into five categories: pioneers, artists, leaders, icons, and titans.
