TLC Star Michelle Duggar Records Transphobic, Anti-Equality Political Message

Remember when TLC lived up to its name as The Learning Channel, before it started chronicling the crazy lives of people who didn't believe in birth control or shame? People like Michelle Duggar, star of 19 and Counting, which chronicles the crazy lives of Michelle, her husband/fellow Independent Baptist Jim Bob and their 19 children in Tontitown, Arkansas. Between her family and prestigious TV career, Michelle still found time to record a transphobic message against neighboring town Fayetteville's pending non-discrimination ordinance.

The ordinance seeks to protect people from being discriminated against in housing, employment and public accomodations on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Of course, for Duggar, that translates to child predators invading women's bathrooms. Duggar recorded her plea for the safety of the children — for the love of god, won't someone think of the children —in a robocall to Fayetteville residents:

"Hello, this is Michelle Duggar. I’m calling to inform you of some shocking news that would affect the safety of Northwest Arkansas women and children. The Fayetteville City Council is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night that would allow men — yes, I said men — to use women's and girls' restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only.

"I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls. I doubt that Fayetteville parents would stand for a law that would endanger their daughters or allow them to be traumatized by a man joining them in their private space. We should never place the preference of an adult over the safety and innocence of a child. Parents, who do you want undressing next to your daughter at the public swimming pool’s private changing area?"

The recording was backed by the ultra-conservative Arkansas Family Council, which claims the ordinance would "infringe on the rights of churches as well as religious business people." Because god forbid anything should infringe on the rights of churches and religious business people to infringe on the rights of people they don't like, know or understand.
