NY Giants Hire Anti-Gay Spokesman David Tyree As Head Of Player Development: Today In Gay
A lubricant on the condom contains the antiviral Viva Gel, designed to eradicate sexually transmitted infections. Starpharma, the bio-tech firm that developed the Viva Gel condom, says its is 99.9% effective in killing HIV, HPV and herpes.
Starpharma recently received Conformity of Assessment Certification by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, similar to the FDA, meaning it could bring the condoms to market in a matter of months.
The gel is undergoing trials in the U.S., but currently only for use in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis.
A Catholic school teacher in Italy was fired for failing to deny she was a lesbian. “Maybe I’m a lesbian, maybe I’m not," she said. "But asking me about my sexual orientation as a condition for renewing my contract is unacceptable.”
Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, because it deprives citizens of the right to define marriage.
Hmm, did we miss that one in the Bill of Rights?
Voters in the Peach State approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2004. It was challenged, but in 2006 the state Supreme Court ruled the ban was valid.
In his brief, Olen’s maintained that “judicially imposing such a result now would merely wrest a potentially unifying popular victory from the hands of supporters and replace it instead with the stale conformity of compulsion.”
Olens also argued that recent decisions striking down constitutional bans in other states should not apply to Georgia because the state's marriage laws do not imply a right to marry someone of the same sex.
"This is a strong indication the attorney general plans on defending the marriage ban regardless of the precedent lining up against him [underscoring] that the federal Constitution provides to all citizens the right to marry the person they love,” said Beth Littrell of Lambda Legal, the group representing plaintiffs in the current challenge.
According to the Arabic newspaper Al-Watan, “the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice... tracked down the owner of the account.” He was arrested and his phone was confiscated.
"It is infuriating and disheartening when a country that was elected not too long ago to become a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council arrogantly and nonchalantly violates its core principles and harms its own citizens," said Abdulla, the chair of the United Arab Emirates LGBT group. “If the man survives this ordeal he will find himself an outcast and will be in danger for life after he completes this harsh sentence.”
Tyree made sports history in 2008 with an infamous helmet catch that helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLII, but he hasn't scored any points with the gay community.
In a National Organization for Marriage video from 2011, Tyree predicted that if New York passed marriage equality “what I know will happen if this does comes forth is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward...anarchy. That will be the moment our society loses its grip with what is right."
The Empire State did pass marriage equality in 2011—and, so far, no anarchy.
Tyree later said he would trade his Super Bowl win to stop gays from marrying, and declared he didn't "want my kids to think homosexuals are normal."
Unsurprisingly, Tyree is also an advocate for reparative therapy, declaring "I'll never be a former black—I have met former homosexuals. That's the truth."
Reaction from LGBT groups has been mixed. HRC's Chad Griffin said in a statement that the Giants organization "risked its credibility" by hiring Tyree. "His opposition to basic legal equality aside, David Tyree's proselytizing of such dangerous practices goes against the positive work the Giants organization has done in recent years."
But Wade Davis, an openly gay former NFL player and the director of the You Can Play, chastised HRC in a tweet last night. "At NFL symposium I hung with [David Tyree] and his family. People evolve, learn & love. Compassion is a two-way street @HRC @YouCanPlayTeam @Giants."
The Giants said in a statement on Tuesday that Tyree "was expressing his personal view, and that is not the view of the Giants organization." Both former Giant Michael Strahan and Giants owner Steve Tisch posted videos in support of marriage equality before it became law in New York.
