Prop 8 Attorney Ted Olson: Marriage Equality Is "Past The Point Of No Return": Today In Gay

Ted Olson, the Republican lawyer whose legal acumen got California’s Proposition 8 overturn in the Supreme Court, says the

highest court in the land has passed “the point of no return” on marriage equality.

“To have that snatched away, it seems to me, would be inhuman; it would be cruel; and it would be inconsistent with what the Supreme Court has said about these issues in the cases that it has rendered.”

Let's hope so.

The United Methodist Church's judicial council ruled today that a Pennsylvania church jury was wrong to defrock Frank Schaefer last year, after he officiated his son's same-sex wedding and wouldn't vow not to perform another such ceremony.

"This is a positive decision that keeps the dialogue going," said Schaefer. "They didn't bar a person who is an outspoken activist and who has said that, if asked, he would perform another gay marriage."

While the UMC welcomes gay and lesbian parishioners, it still teaches that sex outside of heterosexual marriage is not in God's plan.  Schaefer hopes the church will change its stance at its next General Conference in 2016.

The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell did not affect current Department of Defense policy banning candidates from service if they have  “history of major abnormalities or defects of the genitalia, such as change of sex [and] hermaphroditism.”

“The outdated, discriminatory ban on open trans service is bad for trans people, bad for military readiness, and bad for America," said Mara Kiesling of the National Center for Transgender Equality.

The 22-page document dismisses Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt's ability to defend the ban on same-sex matrimony, which it describes as something "utterly contrary to Bible doctrine" that will ultimately "destroy Kansas."

Today the number one moral issue facing this nation is same-sex marriage.

WBC has a vital interest in what the courts rule regarding this issue, as it directly impacts their religious practices, beliefs, preachments, picketing, association and speech, as well as the wellbeing, of their fellow man.

Well, they're already calling themselves a "church"—why not throw "legal experts" into the pot while they're at it.

A new survey from GLSEN reveals some improvement for LGBT students during the 2012-2013 school year from the year prior.

Of the nearly 8,000 students surveyed, ages 13 to 21, more than 55% reported feeling unsafe at school due to their sexual orientation, down nine points from 2011. Some 36% reported physical harassment (down from 38%) and 16% said they had been physically assaulted, sometimes with a weapon, a decline of 2 percentage points.

This survey dug deeper than earlier reports, and yielded new insights on the classroom atmosphere: Almost 18% of the students surveyed reported being prevented by from “discussing or writing about LGBT topics in school assignments,” while 16% were banned from wearing clothing or items supporting LGBT issues.

For the first time, students were also asked whether they had heard negative comments about transgender people.
