A 69-year-old New York man is dead after being repeatedly stabbed by an assailant who thought he was “blowing kisses” at him—even though the victim was straight. Steven Torres, 22, has been arrested for murdering Ever Orozco Monday afternoon, after Orozco dropped his wife off at the doctor’s office and parked his car. Torres quickly ran from the scene at 90th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, but after witnesses chased after him, he was apprehended by police several blocks away. Torres is already facing charges of stabbing another man for “coming on to him,” though that victim survived.

Acclaimed actor-director Robert Redford was on hand at Equality Utah’s annual dinner Monday night, telling the crowd “I’m here for the same reason you are — equal rights for all.” Redford, whose Sundance Film Festival in Park City has long connected him to the state, urged the Salt Lake State to evolve on the issue of LGBT rights: “I hope in this particular case that Utah can catch up. What happens in Utah can matter in a profound way. Anytime you change the lines or change laws in Utah that are discriminatory, many are going to see it as a benchmark, possibly, for other places.”

An openly gay priest has been appointed the Chaplain General of the Canadian military: Brigadier-General John Fletcher, an Anglican padre, came out in 1992 after Canada lifted its ban on gays in the military. “I see (my situation) as just another example of that same sort of trend that we as Canadians should celebrate and embrace,” says Fletcher. “[But we should] continue to look at the barriers that might be elsewhere that are keeping people from pursuing vocations they are qualified, or feeling called to go and do.”
