Slayer's Tom Araya Thinks Conversion Therapy Is Hilarious

"Mike Pence turning fruits into vegetables."

Tom Araya's recent declaration that we all need to support President Trump was polarizing, but following it up with "jokes" about conversion therapy was just downright gross.

It all started when the Slayer singer used the band's Instagram to post a photoshopped image of them with Trump. When the picture was taken down, likely by someone in his camp, he reposted it with an angry caption.

"Believe it or not, this picture was posted by me, Tom Araya, on 1/20 cause I thought it was funny," he wrote. "I never would have guessed that there where [sic] so many snowflakes commenting their distaste for the new president. Like him or not, he is the president."

But as the editor of Stereogum pointed out on Twitter, Araya then took to the comments to make a joke about Vice President Mike Pence's past support of gay conversion therapy, writing, "Mike Pence turning fruits into vegetables."

The band was quick to release a statement separating themselves from Araya's comments, saying that it was "not something the band would have posted if asked, and does not belong on a Slayer social page."

Araya later commented that he was just joking, of course, and only made the comments to get a reaction.

"Thanks...to everybody that has commented, thanks for insight," he wrote with an overabundance of ellipses. "This is how fake news gets started, not once did I say that I supported Trump...and assuming I speak for the band, you are mistaking [sic]...the picture did exactly what I thought it would do...piss some of you off.”
