Tom Daley and fiancé Dustin Lance Black are clearing the air after reports surfaced online that the young diver had sent explicit photos and videos to a fan while the couple was on a break.
News of the Olympian’s tryst broke over the weekend when a Snapchat video of Daley showing off his fit physique for a 23-year-old fan popped up on the Internet.
Though rumors about the diver’s infidelity began to spread, the couple has now addressed them by admitting that the incident occurred while they were on a secret seven-month break.
“I mean, being very frank, I was out of the country for about seven months last year,” Black told The Sun. “I’d been back and forth before that too, and in that time Tom and I took a decision to take a bit of time off.”
During that time, Daley connected with a fan on Instagram, striking up a casual cyber relationship that would last throughout his break from Black.
“I’m 22 years old—if you talk to someone through social media, it is what it is,” said Daley. “It was nothing more than that. We never physically met… but in the modern world… [things like this] spread like wildfire.”
Even as the diver’s social media exploits came at a tense time for the couple, he admits that being honest with Black about the relationship has made their own stronger than ever.
“We’re soulmates and the only way we were going to get back to that point was to be honest, open and share everything that happened in our time away from each other.”
“We don’t have secrets in our relationship,” he concluded. “We’re honest and open about everything. When we were back together I told him everything.”
“We didn’t tell a lot of people and it wasn’t the easiest time for us, so what Tom did in that time was his personal business,” Black added. “Tom and I talked about everything that went on. That’s the secret to how we are so close and can survive the tough times.”
The couple is now happily back together and finishing up plans for their upcoming nuptials.
In addition to preparing for their wedding, the duo are also keeping busy with their own personal projects, which include a cookbook for Daley and directing the ABC miniseries When We Rise for Black.
