You're Going to Want to Get Your Hands on Tom of Finland's Underwear

Bulge not included.

Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland, enjoys something of a cult status in the gay community. Over the course of his four decade career, he created an estimated 3,500 illustrations, most of which depicted hyper-masculine men—cops, sailors, bikers, and other gay archetypes—in a variety of sexualized scenarios and in various states of undress. Many of his iconic figures can be seen wearing little more than underwear or jock straps.

For those who may want to capture that aesthetic for himself, Stockholm-based men’s underwear label CDLP has released two limited edition items, the Tanga Brief ($60) and Jock Strap ($85)—presented in white and black respectively, as a nod to the artist’s monochromatic palette.

The designs for the pieces were created in collaboration with the Tom of Finland Foundation, a non-profit archive dedicated to the preservation and promotion of his art. Each item comes with a portrait of the artist, a limited edition print, and a custom presentation box featuring some of the artist’s most iconic work. Considering Tom of Finland wine and backpacks exist, surprisingly, this is the first underwear collaboration for the Foundation.

"Tom’s influence on fashion and imprint on popular culture is undeniable," explains Durk Dehner, co-founder of Tom of Finland Foundation. "Designers that include Jean-Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford and Helmut Lang have been influenced by his work. This collaboration marks how fantasy can come to life.”
