Tony-Winning Actress Lena Hall Will Play Hedwig In Touring Production With Darren Criss

She's got it "All Sewn Up"

Lena Hall received a well-deserved Tony for her role as Yitzhak in recent Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but when the show begins touring this fall she'll get to play Hedwig herself.

Darren Criss is reprising his role as the East German transgender rocker stuck in Middle America, but Hall will pull the wig down from the shelf and tackle the lead once a week during the show's runs in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

"I'm thrilled to be returning to Hedwig and the Angry Inch performing not one, but two iconic roles in Los Angeles and my hometown of San Francisco," Hall said in a statement.

"I have never been one to shy away from a challenge and playing Hedwig has always been a dream of mine. To be able to play both Yitzhak and Hedwig in the same day presents one of the biggest challenges I have seen to date and I'm so excited!"

Hall will play Hedwig on October 9, 12, 19, and 26 in San Francisco, and November 6, 13, 20, and 25 in Los Angeles.

Taye Diggs and Rebecca Naomi Jones broke the show's color barrier as the first black Hedwig and Yitzhak, respectively. Ally Sheedy played Hedwig during the show's initial off-Broadway run at the Jane Street Theater, though critics were not thrilled.

"It’s simply easier for a male performer to suggest the inherent ironies of this transsexual manque," wrote Charles Isherwood in Variety.

"The psycho-sexual convolutions of the role... and its winkingly gauche glitter-rock theatricality prove an awkward fit for an actress best known for (and served by) her screen work."

The Broadway revival opened at the Belasco Theatre on April 22, 2014, and earned four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Neil Patrick Harris.
