Toronto Fashion Week Unveils "Gay Sweater" Knit From 100 LGBT People's Hair

If you thought sexuality was merely for the living, behold the first 'gay object,' a sweater knitted from the donated hair of more than 100 LGBT folks that debuted today during Toronto Fashion Week.

“The idea for the sweater was born from a desire to educate and encourage everyone to use ‘gay’ the correct way,” said Jeremy Dias, director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, who commissioned the sweater.

“We want the conversation that surrounds the gay sweater to inspire those who are using ‘gay’ in a detrimental way to both realize the negative impact their words and actions are having and change their behavior," says Dias.

"This is such an extreme manifestation of the word that I think people will be forced to realize how silly they sound when they say it," says Amelia, one of the knitters of the "Gay Sweater." Though it's very "unusual," adds another knitter, Brenna, who admits its a less-than-ideal material to craft a garment from.
