An Oakland, California, Toyota dealership has produced what may be the first car commercial to exclusively feature a same-sex couple.

"As far as I know—and I specialize in automotive advertising—no one has ever seen a local advertisement that has a same-sex couple in it," Handcrafted Media's David Pippenger told SF Gate. A national campaign sponsored by Chevrolet included same-sex families during the Super Bowl, but they were not the sole focus.

The commercial, produced by One Toyota of Oakland, has been quietly running for more than a week, but still managed to cause a stir, with one YouTube commenter complaining: "Keep your politics out of ads, Toyota. Kids watch TV and don't need to see this crap."

One Toyota's owner Brian McCafferty is not standing for any of that crap: "This is Northern California, not Alabama," he said. "I don't know if anyone has checked, but it's 2014."
