Trans Hotline Receives Record 350 Calls In 24 Hours After Election

“If you are not trans, we say to you :  Stand with us. We love you... and we need you to show up for us.”

A crisis hotline for the transgender community is reporting it received an astounding 350 calls in the 24 hours following the election of Donald Trump.

Thankfully, the team at the Trans Lifeline, staffed by trans-identified operators, were able to field many of the calls. But as the numbers are only expected to rise over the next weeks, organizers have put out a special call to help bring on additional staff.

"Trans people are among many people who are mourning today," the group wrote on its website Wednesday.

"We know that communities of color, Muslims, immigrants and many other groups are feeling the betrayal, sadness, and fear that comes with living in a country where a majority of people voted for a leader who hates you. It is personal. It is tragic. But it is not the end."

"If you are trans, we say to you: Keep fighting. We love you," they added. "If you are not trans, we say to you, Stand with us. We love you too, and we need you to show up for us."

Anxiety levels are high in the LGBT community, where many fear Republicans will roll back the advances brought by the Obama Administration. The trans community, still fighting for basic recognition and respect, is particularly vulnerable.

On social media, reports have been circulating of nearly a dozen young trans people attempting suicide. (These reports are unconfirmed.)

The hotline is looking to raise $100,000 to hire three fulltime staffers to train and supervise volunteers. The group has already raised $50,000, but you can make a donation here to help them reach their goal.

If you are a trans person in crisis, reach out to the Trans Lifeline at 877-565-8860.
