Transgender Woman Shot and Killed in Kansas City

Say her name: Brooklyn Lindsey.

Police have identified the body of a person shot and killed in Missouri earlier this week as 32-year-old Brooklyn Lindsey, a black transgender woman.

According to The Kansas City Star, Lindsey was found dead on the porch of an abandoned house in Kansas City, Missouri, this Tuesday, June 25, with obvious signs of trauma to the face. Neighbors reported hearing verbal arguments and gunshots shortly before her death.

Her cause of death has not yet been determined, but authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Lindsey is one of at least 11 transgender Americans who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence in 2019. This month alone, at least three other trans women in the U.S.—Zoe Spears of Washington, D.C.; Chanel Scurlock of Lumberton, North Carolina; and Chynal Lindsey of Dallas, Texas—were killed.

As evidenced in 2019 and previous years, the majority of victims affected by anti-transgender violence are black trans women.

Anyone with information regarding Lindsey's death is asked to call Kansas City's TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
