A transgender woman was killed in Miami, Florida in the early morning hours of July 31.

Marquis “Kiki” Fantroy was shot in the area of SW 224 Street and SW 115 Court, according to police, in the Goulds neighborhood of Southwest Miami-Dade. She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"Detectives have determined there were a number of witnesses and we’re asking the community to come forward," Miami-Dade Police Detective Lee Cowart said, according to the Miami Herald.

Police officials have said they do not think Fantroy's gender identity was a contributing factor in her murder, but her mother, Rhonda Comer, disagrees. Comer said her daughter was coming home from a party with a group of friends and was propositioned for sex. When she denied those advances, the person or persons making the request then opened fire, according to Comer, NBC 6 reports.

"This feeling is indescribable. The pain. The void. You know that feeling after losing a child and you losing a child for no apparent reason," her mother said. "And my understanding, you know, my understanding was she was killed because of her desire to be a woman."

She said Fantroy enjoyed music and photography and wanted to be "another RuPaul. She used to say one day she was going to California."

Fantroy is at least the 13th known transgender person killed in the United States this year, all of whom have been black trans women.
