On Friday President Trump finally issued guidance on his plan to prohibit transgender service members in the U.S. military.

A White House official told reporters the directive bans the Armed Forces from recruiting trans personnel, and the Department of Defense from funding transition-related medical treatment.

Early reports indicated active duty trans personnel would be ale to complete their enlistment, but the spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied this. He stated Departments of Defense and Homeland Security have been directed "to determine how to address transgender individuals currently serving based on military effectiveness and lethality, unitary cohesion, budgetary constraints, applicable law, and all factors that may be relevant.”

Speaking with press on Friday, the unnamed official reiterated that Trump was an ally to LGBT Americans.

"The President is the President for all Americans, and during last year's campaign he was the first GOP nominee to talk about LGBTQ issues at the GOP convention, but he also was critical of the Obama administration's change in that longstanding DOD policy," he said. "He's going to continue to ensure that the rights of the LGBTQ community, as well as all Americans, is protected. This policy is based on a series of national security considerations."

Trump initially declared a full ban via a series of tweets on July 26, prompting outrage from both Republicans and Democrats and confusion within the Pentagon.

Earlier this week, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund reiterated denying any person the right to serve their country was un-American.

“Transgender people have been and will continue to be loyal and effective service members protecting our country," said TLDEF director Jillian Weiss. "The question isn’t whether to have trans service members. The question is whether we treat them fairly, and with dignity.”
