Transgender Navy SEAL Running For Congress Slams Mike Huckabee: "He Doesn't Care About Us"

The former Arkansas governor plans to stifle LGBT equality if elected president.

Transgender former Navy SEAL and congressional candidate Kristin Beck has responded to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and the offensive comments he made about transgender service members during the first GOP 2016 presidential debate last Thursday.

Asked what he would do to reform the military, Huckabee vowed he'd disallow transgender people from serving openly. "The military is not a social experiment. The purpose of the military is to kill people and break things," he said.

Beck, a 20-year-veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, responded to Huckabee's diatribe in a tweet. "I am twice the man that you could ever be!" she wrote.

"If you’re going to represent the country, you need to represent everyone," she told The Daily Beast in an interview this week.

Said Beck: "Right now he’s being derogatory and disrespectful to a huge part of the nation—with the amount of transgender people in America who have wives and husbands, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. People who understand who we are. [Our population] could go as high as 20 to 25 million people…[These are] people he should be serving, and he doesn’t care about us."

Beck is hoping to address issues facing the "average American" in her campaign for Maryland's Fifth Congressional District, with which she'll need to beat a well-liked incumbent, Representative Steny Hoyer.

For now, her campaign is primarily web-based and focuses mostly on jobs, environment, education and energy.

Speaking with MSNBC's Thomas Roberts in March, Beck said she wants to run for Congress to help cut through political red tape. “For the last two or three years I have been watching Congress very closely, and the reality is that the whole process has broken down and our representatives have simply dug in their heels,” she said.
