Transgender People Targeted With Paintball Attacks In Philadelphia

"They should have... the right to walk around this neighborhood without feeling harassed or threatened."

Police in Philadelphia believe assailants are targeting paintball attacks on transgender people in the city.

On Thursday, unknown suspects in a silver Infiniti fired on a couple walking down the street, hitting a woman. A half-hour later they shot at on a group sitting outside the Morris Home, a drug-and-alcohol rehab facility for trans people.

Three people were hit.

"They had welts on their bodies which shows visible signs of injury. Fortunately, they haven't received medical treatment, but they are in a little bit of pain," said Lt. John Walker. "They should have the right to sit on the porch and right to walk around this neighborhood without feeling harassed or threatened."

It's the third attack this week on the center, located in Southwest Philadelphia: On July 4, an M-80 firecracker was thrown on the porch.

In another incident, a Morris Home employee had fireworks thrown at her as she waited for the bus.

Resources for Human Development, which runs the facility, said it "is committed to doing everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of the people we are privileged to support and employ."
