Bailey Reeves was celebrating Labor Day with friends Monday night when the shots rang out. While she was the only person hit, Baltimore police do not believe she was targeted.

The young transgender woman from Rockville, Maryland, was only 17 years old. LGBTQ advocates will count her as the 17th trans homicide victim in the U.S. in 2019 alone, further highlighting the nationwide epidemic of violence impacting the trans and gender nonconforming community.

“It’s highly unusual in an area such as this,” Detective Donny Moses tells NewNowNext. “There were people who were near Bailey, but no one who could identify a suspect.”

According to Moses, Bailey was leaving a Labor Day party on Monday, September 2, with friends on the 4500 Block of Parkview Ave. around 8:05pm.

“The shooter shot from more than half a block away,” he says. “So Bailey was probably not the intended target.”

Northeast District patrol officers found her after she'd sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. She later died at a nearby hospital. No one else was injured in the shooting.

Reeves' death also comes less than a month after the homicide of Tracy Single, a 22-year-old black trans woman from Texas.
