Transgender Woman Found Dead In Her Cell In Men's Prison

"We’ll never get to hear Vicky’s testimony of what it was like in there for her," said MP Cat Smith.

A 21-year-old trans woman was found dead in her cell in an all-male prison in England.

Vicky Thompson had warned she would take her own life if she was sent to Armley, a category B men’s prison in Leeds. Her lifeless body was found on Friday, reports The Guardian, though authorities have not yet declared a cause of death.

Weeks ago, another trans woman, Tara Hudson, successfully petitioned to be transferred to a women's prison in a highly publicized case that drew the attention of members of parliament.

"It must have been terrifying to be driven into a men’s prison after living her whole adult life as a woman. But we’ll never get to hear Vicky’s testimony of what it was like in there for her," said Labour MP Cat Smith, the shadow minister for women and equalities.

Smith asked Justice Secretary Michael Gove to create clear guidelines for transgender prisoners being placed in institutions that matched their gender identity, saying they are either not working or not being implemented properly.

Thompson, who has identified as female since her mid-teens, had been given a 12-month suspended sentence for an undisclosed offense in August, but was taken into custody after breaking the terms of her parole.

She pleaded with the judge to send her to New Hall women’s prison but her request was denied. Thompson’s boyfriend, Robert Steele, says she faced harassment and threats while at Armley.

According to Justice Ministry guidelines, prisoners are placed according to their gender "as recognised by UK law"—which is usually as stated on their birth certificate. A new birth certificate can be issued if they have obtained a gender recognition certificate from the government.

Some trans people can, however be placed in facilities matching their gender presentation, "if they are sufficiently advanced in the gender reassignment process."
