Baltimore Woman Becomes Eighth Trans Person Murdered In America This Year

Police discovered the victim with gunshot wounds to her stomach.

We’re not even three months into the year and 2017 is on track to have the highest number of trans murders on record: Police in Baltimore are investigating the murder of an 38-year-old woman, the eighth known trans person killed this year so far.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital shortly after officers found her suffering from gunshot wounds to her stomach on Wednesday morning at approximately 4:15am. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Witnesses reported hearing someone yelling for help and then hearing gunshots, reports the Washington Blade. Following the gunfire, two African-American males were seen running and getting into a dark vehicle that sped away.

Last year was the deadliest on record for trans people, with 27 known homicides, mostly women of color. At this rate, we’ll break that record in July—and that’s not counting victims who are misgendered, unidentified, or who just disappear without a trace.
