"Transparent" Wins Historic Golden Globe For Best TV Comedy
Amazon Prime original series Transparent just won the Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy Series.
During her acceptance speech, creator Jill Soloway dedicated the historic victory to the trans community and the memory of Leelah Alcorn. She also thanked her transgender parent—saying, “thank you for coming out, MaPa. Maybe we’re going to be able to teach the world something... to love."
Facing a tough category that included favorites like Girls, and Orange Is The New Black, Transparent was able to push past its competition earning both Amazon Prime and Soloway their first Golden Globes.
The show's star, Jeffrey Tambor, also won Best Actor in a Comedy TV Series, and thanked the trans community. Tambor spoke to the Wall Street Journal earlier this week about the importance of award recognition saying, “This gives us a chance to spark the–forgive me for how old I am– the watercooler conversation about this show. We need to put those dots together. That to me is very exciting, because it’s new.”
So far, the Golden Globes is a testament to what happens when we open up space for people to tell different stories. — Mychal Denzel Smith (@mychalsmith) January 12, 2015
