Gay Short Film "Trevor" Has Been Turned Into A Hit Musical

Watch the opening number from the world premiere.

Trevor, a musical based on the Oscar-winning 1994 short film of the same name, is now aiming for Broadway.

Produced in association with U Rock Theatricals, the world premiere musical is currently playing a limited engagement at the Writers Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois.

Set in 1981 and described as "a coming-of-age story about identity, emerging sexuality, and the struggles of growing up in a world that may not be ready for you," the show centers on an imaginative 13-year-old kid named Trevor, who worships Diana Ross, has a crush on a male classmate, and then tries to kill himself after he's rejected by his friends.

The short film, written by James Lecesne, was also the inspiration for The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth. The Trevor Project is not, however, involved with the musical.

"A lot of people who are in their 20s or 30s now come up and quietly take me aside," Lecesne tells the Chicago Tribune of his film's enduring appeal. "That is better than any Academy Award. Those are human beings who are alive. I think Trevor is the thing that I was put on the planet to do."

Directed by Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), the new musical has a score by Dan Collins and Julianne Wick Davis, who also wrote the transgender-themed screen-to-stage musical Southern Comfort.

Trevor officially opened this week to positive reviews. The Chicago Tribune called it "very promising, exceptionally timely, and consistently artful," and Variety called it "sincere and entirely enjoyable."

The opening number, “Do You Know”/“On With the Show!," was recently released on YouTube.

Eli Tokash and Graydon Peter Yosowitz share the title role. The cast also includes Declan Desmond, Sophie Grimm, Maya Lou Hlava, Eloise Lushina, Jhardon DiShon Milton, Reilly Oh, Salisha Thomas, Matthew Uzarraga, Tori Whaples, Jarrod Zimmerman, Nathaniel Braga, Ariana Burks, Timothy Eidman, Isabel Kaegi, Carly Meyer, Justin O’Brien, and Jerome Riley, Jr.

Trevor runs through September 17 at the Writers Theatre.
