President Donald Trump apparently is unaware that the United States has launched an initiative to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide.
The effort, headed up by Richard Grenell, the U.S. Ambassador to Germany and the highest-profile openly gay individual in the administration, is ostensibly in response to Iran hanging a gay man. However, it is also believed to be an attempt to get U.S. allies on board with sanctions against the country, which have thus far not been fruitful.
Grenell cited the hanging in Iran, as well as the anti-LGBTQ detentions, beatings, and killings in Chechnya in a statement about the initiative, even though the United States has reportedly failed to take in any asylum seekers fleeing those attacks in the region.
Trump was asked by a reporter yesterday about the “push to decriminalize homosexuality,” asking, “Are you doing that? And why?”
“I don’t know which report you’re talking about. We have many reports,” he replied, before immediately moving on.
