5 Dollars/5 Minutes: TransLifeline And 5 Calls

Whether you give time or money, help the resistance a little bit every day.

5 Dollars/5 Minutes is a regular feature to help direct you to simple, inexpensive ways to act against discrimination and to protect the rights of the LGBT community—and all people—endangered by the Trump administration.

The Trump administration is no trans ally: In February, Trump rescinded protections President Obama instituted in May that confirmed Title IX's prohibitions on sex discrimination in education included gender identity. Trump’s reversal allows schools to more easily discriminate against trans students.

Since that news, TransLifeline continues to receive an increase in calls. The nonprofit, which “works to end transgender suicide and improve overall mental health of transgender people through education, advocacy, and direct service,” is currently trying to raise $15,000 to support its growing staff and training initiatives.

5 Calls connects you with your local representatives. "Facebook likes and Twitter retweets can’t create the change you want to see," the site reads. "Calling your government on the phone can."

Based on your location, 5 Calls provides you with five numbers to dial, and a model script to follow. It also tailors the contacts based on what issues are important to you, from urging Congress to grant asylum to Syrian refugees to protecting heating assistance to low-income families.
