Trump's Transgender Ban Will Cost The Military $960 Million To Implement

“American taxpayers should ask the president, who is proud of his business savvy, why he’s spending a dollar to buy a dime.”

A new report from the Palm Center puts a price tag on Donald Trump's proposed ban on transgender service members in the U.S. military: $960 million.

In a tweet on July 26, the president declared that trans personnel could not serve in the Armed Forces "in any capacity."

He cited "tremendous medical costs and disruption" as the cause, but transition-related health care for the estimated 12,800 transgender people already serving only costs the military about $8.4 million, less than one-hundredth of what it'll cost to ferret out and dismiss them.

“If President Trump is truly concerned about the financial costs of transgender service, his announced ban has it exactly backwards,” said Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center, “American taxpayers should ask the president, who is proud of his business savvy, why he’s spending a dollar to buy a dime.”

Lawsuits have already been filed by the ACLU, as well as the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), representing a half-dozen plaintiffs serving in the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The suits maintain the ban violates the Fifth Amendment's guarantee of equal protection and due process.

“Trump’s directive to exclude transgender people from military service has created a tidal wave of harms that have already been felt throughout our armed services,” NCLR director Shannon Minter told HuffPo. “Transgender service members have been blindsided by this shift and are scrambling to deal with what it means for their futures and their families. The President’s mistreatment of these dedicated troops will serve only to weaken and demoralize our armed forces.”

In an open letter released last week, 56 retired U.S. generals and admirals criticized the ban, claiming it would “would cause significant disruptions, deprive the military of mission-critical talent, and compromise the integrity of transgender troops."
