TV on Tap: “Pretty Little Liars” Returns and was “Mad Men” Gay Reveal a Misdirection?

It’s finally official, creator Dan Harmon will return to manage the fifth season of Community.

In talking with Vulture Guillermo Diaz says the cast of Scandal doesn’t take their show’s twists and turns any better than the audience does, “We’re constantly like, ’Oh my God! This is really happening!’ We all look at each other, and we all look at (Scandal producer) Shonda (Rhimes), and she’s like, ’Yep.’ She kind of shrugs like, Yeah. I know.

Scandal, "Seven Fifty-Two"Don’t worry, Diaz also discuses Huck’s wig.

Fox has picked a new producer for American Idol, hiring a producer who recently managed the Swedish version of Idol.

Blergh indeed:

HBO’s rapture pilot The Leftovers has added a quartet to its cast, including former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston.

Did we get a highly-anticipated outing on last week’s Mad Men? TheWrap doesn’t think so saying it’s a matter of misdirection on (Mad Man creator) Matthew Weiner’s part and that hitting on Pete was just a way to undermine a rival’s confidence. I know I wondered why anyone would fall for Pete, but I’m not sure saying that Bob (James Wolk) was just toying with Pete makes a lot more sense.

James Wolf from "Mad Men"Let’s not forget important topics like the length of Bob’s shorts.

A pair of cable networks passed out some renewal orders. BBC America ordered a second season of Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan while OWN has ordered additional seasons of Life with La Toya, Raising Whitley and Ilyana: Fix My Life. I’m not complaining, but did anyone predict that La Toya would become the most prominent Jackson sibling?

Friday’s return of Continuum got a modest start. Ratings were basically flat from the series’ disappointing Syfy debut. Considering that Syfy moved the show from Monday to Friday, that’s isn’t so bad.

The Haves and Have Nots Re-Airing (OWN) starting at 6:00 PM ET
If, like me, OWN’s Tyler Perry-created soap fell under your radar until a gay character turned up, OWN is re-airing the three episodes so far this evening.

The Haves and Have Nots' Gavin Houston and Aaron O'ConnellThe Haves and Have NotsJeffery (Gavin Houston) and Wyatt (Aaron O’Connell).

Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) 8:00 PM ET
Part of the greatness of Pretty Little Liars since the second season was the way the show would offer answers and new mysteries like crazy. The fourth season kicks off as the Liars want to know about the mysterious Alison blur-alike in the red coat, new threats from “A” and a mysterious nearby town to visit.

The Haves and Have Nots (OWN) 9:00 PM ET
Jim Cryer announces he is running for office, giving us Revenge flashbacks as rich people with secrets get into politics. I haven’t had a chance to watch this yet, so I’m just hoping Jim’s wife has Victoria Greyson’s saboteuse tendencies.

Twisted (ABC Family) 9:00 PM ET
ABC Family continues its search for a thriller to pair with Pretty Little Liars by debuting this drama about a teen who gets out of juvie just in time to become the suspect in the murder of a high school student. Continuing the channel’s casting history, this one has faboo performers like Kathy Najimy and Keiko Agena set to appear.

Awkward. (MTV) 10:00 PM ET
Awkward. heads into its midseason break with Colin holding a photography exhibit, which in the world of Jenna Hamilton is a way to throw her relationship for a loop. An art show with relationship drama, who wishes they could have gone to school in Palos Verdes?

Chopped (Food Network) 10:00 PM ET
I’m not sure what “bacon popcorn” is — I have a bad feeling it involves a powdered flavoring that somewhat approximates the flavor of bacon. (On the other hand, has anyone ever tried popping popcorn in bacon grease?) Whatever it is, that’s what shows up in the appetizer baskets.

Awkward. Aftershow (MTV) 10:30 PM ET
I guess MTV thinks viewers will need an Aftershow to talk through all their feelings the finale inspires. Don’t we do that by posting animated gifs to Tumblr, these days?

Chelsea Lately (E!) 11:00 PM ET
Ross continues his week by chatting with Australian bestselling author Bradley Trevor Greive.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central) 11:00 PM ET
