TV on Tap: Christine Ebersole Joins TBS Comedy, ABC Sets Its Midseason Schedule and TLC Seeks “Geek Love”

Death Valley wraps its first season tonight.

TBS’ comedy pilot Sullivan and Son has been on the edge of my radar for a little while and I wasn’t sure what to think of it. It stars Hapa comedian Steve Bryne, who I enjoy when he’s not making jokes that have a bit of effeminophobic edge to them. Unfortunately, it’s also produced by Vince Vaughn. However, I’m much more interested in the comedy now that Christine Ebersole has joined the cast as one of the regulars at the bar Bryne’s character runs.

With Dexter having received a renewal for two more seasons, Showtime is saying that the the series might conclude at the end of those two seasons. Might. I feel like we’ve already been through that dance with the past season of Weeds.

TLC has ordered two specials of a reality show, Geek Love, which will follow speed dating events at nerd gatherings. I love the idea but being on the network of Toddlers & Tiaras and I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant makes me expect that they’ll turn it into another freak show.

I’m constantly disappointed by news about the new Twilight movie because, at first glance, I read Breaking Dawn as Breaking Bad. It turns out the two have more in common than I expected.

ABC has announced the first round of midseason premieres and GCB will debut on March 4 (maybe ABC will find a good title for the show by then), horror series The River will premiere on February 7, the Ashley Judd/Sean Bean thriller Missing arrives on March 15 and the cancellation watch for drag comedy Work It begins on January 3. Pan Am and Man Up! will leave the schedule once all the episodes have aired.

Missing from that midseason schedule is Cougar Town which isn’t expected to debut until March and, thus, has had its order cut back to 15 episodes. I don’t think that sounds like a bad omen as much as the rumor that it’s expected to air after Last Man Standing when it does return.

In ratings news, it looks like Regis Philbin’s final episode on Live with Regis and Kelly may reach record ratings heights when all the numbers are totaled, with the audience more than doubling in some cities.

Friday’s ratings had some good news for Grimm, which stayed steady after two weeks of dropping numbers. I still say those numbers look really good considering how many viewers it adds from its lead-in, Chuck. Meanwhile, Thursday’s ratings make Prime Suspect’s cancellation look even more likely as it and Whitney hit or tied all-time lows.

Finally, the new season of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood debuts next Tuesday. Here’s a peek at the new season:

The Nate Berkus Show (syndicated) Check local listings

Terra Nova (Fox) 8:00 PM ET
As if a potential mole wasn’t enough to deal with, Jim discovers a murder at some point in the colony’s past. Hopefully, the Terra Nova annual festival will make things easier.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 8:00 PM ET
Okay, so after last week’s Barrobin heartbreaker, I feel safe to say that HIMYM has corrected for last season’s awfulness. Tonight should bring more drama as Barney and Ted consider a life-changing decision while Marshall and Lily consider a move to Long Island.

2 Broke Girls (CBS) 8:30 PM ET
It’s Caroline’s first holiday as a broke girl and she and Max take an extra job at a mall’s Santaland to make extra money.

Enlightened (HBO) 9:30 PM ET
Amy deals with her relationship with Levi and her own loneliness issues, leading her to get closer to Tyler and set him up on a date. I hope Amy doesn’t end up pulling a Will Schuester.

Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) 10:00 PM ET
When Steve takes a mission to North Korea and ends up a hostage, they turn to Jimmy Buffett for help with the rescue mission. Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting that.

Chelsea Lately (E!) 11:00 PM ET
Oh dear. Tonight, Chelsea’s guest is Miss Piggy. I hope Chelsea watches her barbs, I wouldn’t’ want this interview to end in a karate chop.

Death Valley (MTV) 11:00 PM ET
In the first season finale, the UTF tries to negotiate a peace conference with the vampires.
