TV on Tap: Tuesday’s Comedy Pile Up Begins with “New Girl,” “Ben & Kate” and “The Mindy Project”

Schmidt! Nick! Winston! Cece! The other one! (Who is that?) They’re back!

Sigh. I’m going to need a second DVR when Happy Endings returns in a few weeks…

ABC Family’s Jennifer Lopez-produced drama pilot The Fosters has found the women who will head the series’ family. Teri Polo and Sherri Saum will play the lesbian couple who are parents to several adopted children.

Yes. Politics. I can’t think of another reason why The Apprentice has never won an Emmy.

It’s official, Bethenny Frankel’s talk show is getting a national rollout sometime next year.

Gary Marshall is getting back into producing comedies. He is developing one for Fox about a man who loses his fortune and is forced to move back with his family.

At this point, I think a list like this doesn’t really demonstrate a problem with the Emmys but that today’s TV is an embarrassment of riches.

Morning Joe co-host Willie Geist is set to start working on the third hour of The Today Show. It’s a move that has positioned Geist as a potential replacement for Matt Lauer. I just hope that means he’ll have is angry glare ready for when Al Roker says something that will draw the attention of The Soup’s producers.

HBO has ordered a final season of Treme, though it will be a short season consisting of four to six episodes. I swear I just heard a thousand Deadwood fans cry out in frustration at the idea of another HBO series getting actual closure.

FX is developing a drama based on the movie Fargo. If you think about it, a Fargo series would make an apt companion for Justified.

This season, The Simpsons will take a trip to Kang and Kodos’ planet… and it won’t be in the Halloween episode.

Anderson Live (syndicated) Check local listings
Katherine Schwarzenegger is Anderson’s guest-host today, I guess they’ll compare notes about growing up in a famous family. Also, Anderson talks with Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rosie Perez about their movie Won’t Back Down.

Live with Kelly and Michael (syndicated) Check local listings
NeNe Leakes is visiting today. If she doesn’t talk up The New Normal, I expect she’ll need new lessons on promotion from those Bravo handlers.

Katie (syndicated) Check local listings
Barbra Streisand is giving Katie one of her rare television appearances to discuss her landmark career moments, the possibility of putting out another Broadway album or just retiring.

New Girl (Fox) 8:00 PM ET
It may have started as a Zooey Deschanel vehicle but New Girl season one didn’t waste a very talented cast (nor did it waste all the work Max Greenfield does at the gym). The second season begins with Schmidt having a party to announce that he’s “rebranding” himself, a celebration that has a cocktail waitress played by Parker Posey. I imagine she’ll be a happy-go-lucky free spirit, like most of her characters. Also, Schmidt does some firedancing!

Ben & Kate (Fox) 8:30 PM ET
The first new comedy Fox is debuting tonight follows a man (Nat Faxon) who moves in with his younger sister (Dakota Johnson), an overwhelmed single mother, to help her raise her daughter. Next week it’s joined by Raising Hope, making an hour of TV families that don’t resemble the usual TV family.

Go On (NBC) 9:00 PM ET
Ryan starts to reconsider the whole “rejecting pity” thing when NHL star Jeremy Roenick invites him to join a hockey game after years of begging for an invite. Meanwhile, Anne decides to make Ryan her plus one to a wedding. Considering Julie White’s comments about the common traits between Ryan and Anne, I’ve been waiting for a story like this.

Face Off (Syfy) 9:00 PM ET
This week, Syfy gets some promotion in for the upcoming video game Dishonored, which is the artists’ inspiration for this week’s challenge. This is the first I’ve heard of Dishonored, but it’s a game from Bethesda, the publisher that put out The Elder Scrolls games and Fallout 3, which certainly has me interested in finding out more.

New Girl (Fox) 9:00 PM ET
For its first episode in its new time slot, New Girl brings a bunch of guest stars as Jess deals with one unwanted suitor (Josh Gad) before letting another guy (David Walton, last seen on Bent) mistake her for his date. Meanwhile, Nick meets a guy who claims to be future Nick and we’re introduced to Winston’s Schmidt-hating mother (Amen’s Anna Maria Horsford.)

The Mindy Project (Fox) 9:30 PM ET
Throughout its nine seasons, I was more than a little disappointed in how The Office barely used a great supporting cast, especially the shallow Kelly Kapoor. Fox is finally addressing my frustration by giving the faboo Mindy Kaling a comedy that sounds like New Girl if it were built around Kaling instead of Zooey Deschanel. If this comedy can grow the way New Girl did, Fox’s Tuesday nights look very promising.

The New Normal (NBC) 9:30 PM ET
Oh boy. This week, The New Normal gets directly political as Bryan and David learn that Goldie doesn’t plan to vote for Obama, prompting a campaign to change her mind. Why do I have a feeling Bryan and David are going to become your stereotypical smug, condescending, lecturing liberals? I guess it evens out Jane’s depiction of Republicans.

All the Right Moves (Oxygen) 10:00 PM ET
The first season of ATRM wraps tonight with a two-hour double-feature as Travis gets career advice from Adam Shankman and Shaping Sound prepares for a performance on Dancing with the Stars.

Vegas (CBS) 10:00 PM ET
CBS gets into the period drama trend with this drama inspired by Las Vegas rancher-turned-sheriff Ralph Lamb who battled the mob as it tried to establish itself as Vegas was growing into the Sin City we know today. It should be interesting to see what CBS’ take on the period drama turns out to be. Considering how the genre is starting to feel a little cliched, adding a case-of-the-week aspect might be a needed change.

Brickleberry (Comedy Central) 10:30 PM ET
While I can occasionally get into an episode of Tosh.0, Daniel Tosh’s new animated comedy just looks like a collection of the Tosh’s worst traits, including its share of gay jokes.

Watch What Happens Live (Bravo) 11:00 PM ET
Andy doing his part to promote NBC’s Guys with Kids with series producer Jimmy Fallon along with stars Antony Anderson, Jesse Bradford and Zach Cregger.

What will you be watching tonight? Please share in the comments!
