TV on Tap: ABC Orders Dan Savage Comedy, Book Editor Unhappy With "Game of Thrones" Changes And The Final "Revenge"

News

With the May upfronts next week, the announcements are coming fast and furious. The big news is that ABC officially renewed 22 shows. In addition to the obvious picks like How to Get Away with Murder, ABC decided to bring back several shows back from the bubble like Marvel's Agent Carter, Nashville, American Crime and Galavant. More obvious freshman successes like Fresh Off the Boat, black-ish and Secrets & Lies are also getting a second season.

That means bad news for fans of Cristela, Resurrection and Forever.

ABC also ordered nine series, including The Real O'Neals, a comedy based on Dan Savage's life, The Catch, a Shonda Rhimes drama about a fraud investigator played by The Killing's Mireille Enos, and The Muppets.

NBC's new series include Crowded from Hot in Cleveland creator Suzanne Martin and producer Sean Hayes, as well as Superstore, which brings America Ferrera back to TV. Meanwhile, Fox is moving forward with the Rob Lowe/Fred Savage comedy The Grinder as well as the John Stamos' Grandfathered.

The CW also made some programming moves, ordering three series, including that Arrow/The Flash spin-off, which is now titled DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and a musical comedy called Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It also made the cancellation of Hart of Dixie official.

With all those new series orders, several pilots have been passed over including Fortune Feimster's Family Fortune, the medical drama LFE with Andy Mientus, the Tales from the Darkside reboot, and Marc Cherry's Cheerleader Death Squad. Additionally, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off featuring Mockinbird has been put off.

Whew. With the broadcast TV developments out of the way, there are two more programming items to share as BBC America has ordered a fourth season of Orphan Black, while the Disney Channel announced that Phineas and Ferb will end in June. The creators of Phineas and Ferb are moving on to a new series called Mikey Murphy's Law.

The editor of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice books has been tweeting her displeasure over the changes made on Game of Thrones, including the way the show has handled Loras Tyrell, who she calls a "gay cartoon" compared to the books' "much more nuanced" take.

From Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman comes Netflix latest comedy, a story of lifelong rivals (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin) who find themselves forced to turn to each other when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) reveal they're in love and plan to get married. It will be great to see Tomlin and Fonda working together again, many years after Nine to Five, and the trailer looked promising. Keep your fingers crossed this one lives up to the potential of all that creative talent.

Trubel is back in Portland for the penultimate episode of the season, as Nick continues to seek out that Jack the Ripper wannabe... oh and there's that bit about Juliette continuing to revel in the powers of the dark side.

It's a two-hour Five-0 finale as Kono's wedding to Adam nears but the big event could be derailed by a stolen nuke threatening the islands while Chin has to deal with the return of Gabriel (Christopher Sean) and Adam's Yakuza connections. If she makes it to the "I do"s that will be a memorable wedding day for Kono.

Orphan Black (BBC America) 9:00 PM ET

Aw, did we lose the nicest (relatively) of the Castor boys? Now, Sarah has to manage to keep from getting discovered by the Prolethan mother, who seems like she's in the mood to shoot any clone she encounters. Meanwhile, Alison and Donnie meet Ramon's dealer as they get deeper into the world of suburban drug dealing. Sometimes I wish Alison could get her own series so that all the crazy suburban stories could get more time.

Tatiana Maslany and Kristan Braun in "Orphan Black"

Oprah catches up with Janice Dickinson and "the world's first openly gay prince" who I'm guessing is Indian prince Manvendra Singh Gohil.

Once Upon a Time (ABC) 8:00 PM ET

The villains get closer to writing their own happy ending but the Author has a twist planned, one that might end up denying a happy ending to everyone. There's always a twist, isn't there? The original fairy tales were pretty straightforward but nowadays everyone wants to be Rod Serling.

Game of Thrones (HBO) 9:00 PM ET

While we wait for Cersei's brilliant plan of getting the Sparrows worked up about sexual immorality among the royals of King's Landing to backfire (you know that saying about "He who is without sin" that's not you Cersei), this week we find out where Sansa's story is headed as her wedding to Ramsay nears. Will this be another abusive marriage for Sansa or perhaps this will be when she starts putting the lessons she got from Littlefinger to work?

Sophie Turner in "Game of Thrones"

The Good Wife (CBS) 9:00 PM ET

For the sixth season finale, The Good Wife gets to take on a recent local issue as Alicia realizes one of her clients is being held in a secret police facility. I'm guessing it's a facility like the one in Chicago that was made news a few months ago.

The Belchers' latest trip to Craggy Neck ends up sounding like a horror movie when they find themselves stranded by a storm and taking shelter in a house with a mysterious owner.

Revenge ((ABC) 10:00 PM ET

It's the final chapter as Revenge digs up the requisite "Two Graves" to recommended before starting a quest for vengeance. Will Victoria and Emily end up in those graves, or will two more of their loved ones join the list of bystanders?
