TV on Tap: MTV Stays “Awkward.” and “Teen Beach Movie” Cable’s Second Biggest Movie

MTV has found new showrunners for Awkward., and has ordered a fourth season of the scripted comedy.

AwkardMore Awkward., more Matty!

Now that I know that infoMania alum Sarah Haskins co-created the upcoming ABC comedy Trophy Wife, I’m a lot more interested in it.

The TV Land comedy pilot Jennifer Falls has cast Jaime Pressly for its lead role, TVLine reports. The pilot follows a businesswoman who loses her job after losing control of her temper and moves in with her mother. I just hope the script has better punchlines than I Hate My Teenage Daughter.

Starz has cancelled Magic City. First Boss, now Magic City. I wonder if this will be the last time Starz quickly orders a second season of a series, only to cancel it after that second season airs.

Magic CityMaybe if Magic City included a little male nudity to go with all that female nudity…

Meanwhile, Starz has passed on another series. It originally announced it was planning on airing Marco Polo, about the 13th century adventurer. Now the drama will show up on Netflix.

Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus sent a letter to CNN and NBC objecting over projects the networks are making about Hillary Clinton (a documentary at CNN and a scripted mini-series at NBC) calling them a “political ad masquerading as an unbiased production.” Preibus is threatening to move to keep either news network from hosting any primary debates. I guess that means CNN and NBC News will only be able to cover the other networks’ debates while the Democratic candidates get more airtime.

Teen Beach Movie

After all the DVR viewers have been counted, Disney’s Teen Beach Movie ranks as cables second most-watched movie, behind High School Musical 2. Disney’s movies dominate the cable ratings hall of fame, of the top six movies, five debuted on The Disne Channel.

Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) 8:00 PM ET
Confirming suspicions that The FostersCallie and PLL’s Paige don’t just kinda share a look, Page shows up in Rosewood on the day after The Fosters ends. She’s not the only one back as the Liars get a chance to confront Jenna about stuff they think she knows.

Pretty Little Liars, "Into the Deep"

Whose Line Is It Anyway? (CW) 8:00 PM ET
Heart of Dixie cutie Wilson Bethel shows up among the improv sketches this week.

The Chase (GSN) 9:00 PM ET
Thankfully, we’re in a phase when we’re starting to see more game shows on the air and while I’m still hoping for a Whew! revival (or a decent Temptation adaptation) GSN is debuting its version of a hit UK quiz show. The original follows a team of four contestants who end up trying to stay ahead of the Chaser in a series of questions, delivering a nice mix of game and drama. GSN’s version has only one Chaser (the “Beast” from the UK edition) but with a second season already ordered, perhaps there’s a chance at the collection of quizmasters with over-the-top personalities will become a part of the U.S. edition.

GSN's The ChaseI usually hate the current style of harsh lights and shadowy corners
for game show set but it works for
The Chase.

The Haves and Have Nots (OWN) 9:00 PM ET
I’ve been wondering why, of all the cast, we’ve seen Veronica so little. From the looks of tonight’s preview, it’s because if she showed any interest in the rest of the cast, she’d unravel all the secrets and the season would have run out of story weeks ago. Meanwhile, Jeffrey tries to argue that having Wyatt’s ex around puts him at risk of relapsing.

Covert Affairs (USA) 9:00 PM ET
Annie and Augie start to realize that trying to stay two steps ahead of Henry just might be putting a crimp on their relationship. Maybe its time they got themselves assignments where the other one has no “need to know”?

Covert Affairs, "Rock a My Soul"

Interior Therapy (Bravo) 9:00 PM ET
Jeff and Jenni work with a couple who have let their design choices be dictated by how their kid would react. Since we know how Jeff has a weakness for small and cuddly, this is probably the episode where Jeff’s gruff exterior melts away. Oh, wait, I was looking at notes I took from the mirror universe where Suits is a drama about law partners scheming and backstabbing for the right to hug Mike Ross when he does that really adorable blinking thing he does.

Chopped (Food Network) 10:00 PM ET
The appetizer baskets feature Whelk snails and lemon bars, but the big challenge comes in the dessert round when the cheftestants have to include a cucumber salad.

Suits (USA) 10:00 PM ET
Jessica battles her new business partner over control of the stateside office. I’m not longing for the return of Daniel Harman, but I’ve been waiting to see Jessica stare down someone other than Harvey.

Suits, "Conflict of Interest"

Catfish: The TV Show (MTV) 10:00 PM ET
Nev and Max take on the case of Mike, a man who lives only 40 miles from his online girlfriend. She refuses to meet him and Mike thinks its because she was disfigured in a car collision.
