“The Big Bang Theory” Celebrates “Star Wars” Day, Michael McKean Joins “Better Call Saul”

Plenty of news from Syfy today. The most exciting bit is that Tricia Helfer is returning to the channel, joining the mini-series Ascension, according to EW. Ascension follows a secret U.S. mission where hundreds were sent to settle in a new world. However, 50 years into the journey, a murder has everyone questioning their mission. Helfer’s character is described as “beautiful, manipulative and dangerous”– because Helfer portrays those qualities so well.

The channel is also developing a series with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, as reported by TheWrap. Clone is based on a graphic novel about a man who finds out that there are clones of him when one burglarizes his home. If they can find a male actor as talented as Tatiana Maslany, we just might be willing to overlook the inevitable Orphan Black comparisons.

Syfy is also adapting Ronin… because someone doesn’t realize there’s been a saturation of Frank Miller in pop culture.

The channel also has a mockumentary series in the works. Town of the Living Dead will tell the tale of a small town trying to make an indie zombie movie.

Hulu has ordered a second season of the supernatural comedy Deadbeat. Meanwhile, reality TV parody show The Hotwives of Orlando (with Casey Wilson, Kristen Schaal and Angela Kinsey) debuts on July 15.

Casey WIlson in "The Hotwives of Orlando"The Hotwives of Orlando looks amazing.

AMC’s Breaking Bad upcoming prequel Better Call Saul has added another well-known funnyman, casting Michael McKean as a “brilliant attorney” with an “unusual affliction”. It’s worth mentioning, that McKean appeared in four episodes of The X-Files co-written by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

The Mindy Project is losing its receptionist. as TVLine reports, Zoe Jarman will be leaving the comedy next season, though she may return for guest appearances.

Nathaniel Buzolic, Stephen Martines and Danielle Savre in "Supernatural: Bloodlines"My favorite part of “Bloodlines” was Nathaniel Buzolic’s face. I’m still deciding about the other parts.

The ratings for Supernatural’s backdoor pilot episode went up a tick. Will it influence its chances of getting spin-off Bloodlines on the CW’s fall schedule?

HBO is giving a greenlight to more Project Greenlight, the reality show where a first-time director gets to make a film while cameras follow the process. Between this and The Comeback it’s looking like HBO is keen on giving second chances to past shows with devoted followings. I wonder if anyone has pointed out to HBO execs that a new season of Carnivale might be apt once American Horror Story: Freak Show ignites an interest in old school carnivals.

Kathy Griffin visits today to riff on current pop culture. That’s not the only comedy bit, Alonzo Bodden appears in a sketch as the “World’s Tallest Jockey” which sounds like a bad idea considering the problems with eating disorders among jockeys.

Linda Perry is set to visit her wife Sara Gilbert on today’s show. Daytime TV is often too treacly for me, but it gets me when out talk show hosts talk about their marriage.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) 8:00 PM ET
It’s nearly Star Wars Day when certain kinds of nerds wish each other “May the Fourth Be With You” (sadly, few nerds celebrate Klordny Week anymore.) Star Wars Day should be a big deal for Sheldon but he’s in the midst of grieving for… something (has he gotten over the cancellation of Alphas yet?) Good thing Professor Proton’s back to give Sheldon a (probably unwilling) shoulder to cry on.

The iheartradio Music Awards (NBC) 8:00 PM ET
It’s the debut of a new awards show, thanks to May Sweeps. This one is based on online votes. Shakira, Pitbull, Drake and Thirty Seconds to Mars are among the scheduled performers.

The Vampire Diaries (CW) 8:00 PM ET
We’ve reached the point where the season’s main arc is peaking and, having skipped the season until Luke showed up, I’m barely following things. Still, at least I can look forward to another appearance by Grams (the faboo Jasmine Guy).

Michael Malakey in "The Vampire Diaries"qI still like looking at Michael Malarkey though.

The Challenge: Free Agents (MTV) 10:00 PM ET
Volatile gay villain (and fierce competitor) Frank Sweeney got kicked off last week due to viral pnuemonia. Too bad, since he makes for riveting television. (Look out for our interview with him later today). But at least Preston Roberson-Charles (Real World: New Orleans) is still there to represent.

Portlandia (IFC) 10:00 PM ET
For the fourth season finale, Portlandia decides Portland isn’t cool anymore now that everyone likes it. Thus, the residents of the town head to New Breavertown, Oregon. Keep an eye out for k.d. lang

Review with Forrest MacNeil (Comedy Central) 10:00 PM ET
Not watching Comedy Central’s newest series? You’re missing a show that took a fun premise and managed to make it even funnier. Tonight’s season finale sees Forrest finally quit his job as a reviewer of life experiences. Then again, what occupation could he try next? Competitive pancake eater?

Sirens (USA) 10:00 PM ET
Theresa gets an exciting new job offer that would move her to Washington D.C. That prompts a panicked Johnny to propose, hoping that will keep her in Chicago. Getting married to keep a relationship on life support usually works out so well.

Watch What Happens Live (Bravo) 11:00 PM ET
Tonight’s show promises Julie Andrews and Idina Menzel.

@Midnight (Comedy Central) Midnight ET
The hilarious Todd Glass tries to get “Points!” from Chris Hardwick tonight.
