David Tennant returns in “Broadchurch” and Donald Glover Gets an FX Comedy

Community star Donald Glover has signed a deal to develop his own comedy series at FX, according to Deadline. The series would focus on the music scene in Atlanta, where the actor/hip-hop artist grew up. Glover’s still appearing in five episodes of Community next season.

Media watchdog David Brock has joined the RNC’s call for CNN and NBC to cancel their Hillary Clinton projects. Brock writes, “How will your network respond to the right-wing noise machine that is already pressuring you to adopt its ideological lens on Clinton… The threat of misinformation and distortions is too high.” It should be noted that in the 90s, Brock’s work involved trying to get the mainstream media to treat various fake Clinton scandals as a serious story, so he knows how that game is played.

Who said it, Scarface’s Tony Montana or Breaking Bad’s Walter White?

Sci-fi fave¬†Tahmoh Penikett will appear in the upcoming season of Supernatural as one of the angels now stuck on earth. He’s set to play Ezekiel in the season premiere, who is described as a “dignified warrior angel”.

Alyssa Rosenberg lists the three phrases she’d like to stop hearing at the TCA press tour when it comes to discussing diverse casting and “edgy” humor. She praise the producers of Ironwood and Brookyln Nine-Nine while criticizing cast members of Dads (which is seriously sounding like Work It: The Next Generation) for talking like critics just can’t handle DadsNorman Lear-style humor.

Speaking of diverse casting, Neil Gaiman weighed in on picking an actor to play the Doctor on Doctor Who, saying he knows one black actor has been offered the role but turned it down.

Justin Kirk has joined the FX drama pilot Tyrant, which follows an American family who find themselves in the middle of a Middle Eastern nation’s turbulent politics. Kirk will play a “mysterious American diplomat” who is also described as, of course, “sexy”.

Web star Issa Rae is writing a comedy for HBO along with The Daily Show alum Larry Wilmore, Deadline reports. Fans of Rae’s The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl should be happy to hear that the series focuses on a modern and socially awkward African-American woman.

The cancellation of Magic City prompts Tim Goodman to ponder the future of Starz and why it can’t get subscribers to watch its shows. I think the big problem is that Starz’s breakout series, Spartacus turned out to have a different voice from the rest of TV, once you gave it a good look (which was helped by being available on Starz for the first two seasons). The buzz on Starz’s other series never got to the place Spartacus did. Magic City didn’t get to be more than the initial impression of “Mad Men meets The Sopranos“, Boss struggled in a glut of anti-hero dramas and Torchwood: Miracle Day was… well, Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Mark Sheppard is reprising his role on White Collar for a story arc in the upcoming season.

Monday’s ratings news was not happy for network execs. The Bachelorette reached an all-time low for a finale while Under the Dome also hit a series low.

Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles (Bravo) 9:00 PM ET
Bravo’s “bad boys of real estate” are back, just as the high-end Los Angeles real estate market has improved. I hope that means the guys are going to switch from telling sellers their asking price is unrealistic to telling buyers they’re going to have to outbid a deluge of sellers. Aside from finding Josh Flagg oddly adorable, the best part of the Million Dollar Listing franchise is seeing that rich people get played by the real estate game, too.

Broadchurch (BBC America) 10:00 PM ET
AMC made a mess of things when it tried to offer its take on a Danish crime serial. FX’s take, The Bridge seems a lot more promising and now British TV (ITV to be specific) offers its own mystery that takes inspiration from shows like Forbrydelsen. This one has an amazing cast (including David Tennant, Arthur Darvill and Beautiful People’s Olivia Colman) and the reviews have been good, so I’m trying to stay optimistic.

Last week, we got a final tour of Futurama’s robot landscape. I’m guessing we’re going to have a reunion with the mutant underground this week, as Leela grows tentacles. We do know this episode brings the return of Mom, which is a reliable recipe for hilarity.
