TV on Tap: Lifetime Pauses Aaliyah Movie, RuPaul Hires "Mystery Girls" and a Big Step for Rusty on "Major Crimes"

News

Zendaya has quit the Lifetime movie where she was set to play Aaliyah. Without its lead, the movie is on hold.

In news that's already displeasing fans of the character, John Constantine won't be smoking on Constantine. I'll be honest, I understand why fans think that's a character-defining trait but I'm more worried about the show getting his roguish qualities right.

Lighters are okay, though.

Vulture lists all of the patterns that Zoey (Merritt Weaver) has worn on Nurse Jackie. It's been ages since I've worked at the kind of place that gets uniform catalogues, has anyone sensible come out with the Zoey Barkow line, yet?

Following its Supreme Court defeat last week, Aereo has suspended its service, but added that it is not shutting down.

TheAtlantic praises Penny Dreadful for doing a solid job of the sensational reading material its named for — not just in tone but in capturing the way the Penny Dreadful were an expression of Victorian England's worries and obsessions.

True Blood's Kristin Bauer van Straten tells Vulture that she's watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time and sees it as a predecessor to True Blood. "It's like when I was an art history major — it's interesting to look back and see how Monet lead into what we see with Jackson Pollock. Buffy is our predecessor, and really probably opened the door for the next artist to come along and take it to a new level."

This is why The Daily Show shouldn't take breaks. Every time they take a week or two off, people feel free to go overboard on the "this needs to be thoroughly mocked" content.

Vulture's Matt Zoller Seitz argues that Seinfeld (which debuted 25 years ago) opened the door for the current golden age of quality television, challenging the common wisdom that would lead to The Sopranos.

RuPaul will be appearing in an episode of Mystery Girls, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He'll appear out of drag, playing a "flamboyant, theatrical and narcissistic " fashion designer whose new bag goes missing.

One of the most fascinating parts of the 2005 documentary The Grace Lee Project came when it profiled Grace Lee Boggs, the 98-year-old Chineese-American civil rights activist from Detroit. Now, with American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs, POV dedicates a complete documentary to this amazing woman.

Switched at Birth (ABC Family) 8:00 PM ET

In case you haven't heard, Switched at Birth added its third supporting gay character as it turned out Emmett's catfish, Matthew isn't the malicious kind of catfish but a gay kid trying to figure out how to talk to his crush. However, Bay has a difference concern, with Melody thinking of making a major move, she hopes she can imrpove his relationship with his father to keep him in town. Er, does she know the glaring problem with this plan? I mean, she's met Emmett's dad.

The Fosters (ABC Family) 9:00 PM ET

Stef and Lena go on a "babymoon," a vacation that comes before the baby arrives and demands all their attention. With the moms away, it's time for The Fosters to play out the trope where a quiet gathering of friends snowballs into a wild party. For Jude that wild party means getting pulled into an awkward game of spin-the-bottle. This show isn't being subtle anymore when it comes to questioning Jude's sexual orientation.

Major Crimes (TNT) 9:00 PM ET

I hear the next two episodes are key for Rusty. Tonight, he starts questioning his mother's motives and it just might lead to him coming out to her. This sounds like one of those episodes where I wonder how Graham Patrick Martin doesn't get accosted with hugs whenever he's out in public.

American Ninja Warrior (NBC) 9:00 PM ET

Back when NBC originally aired this battle between a team of Ninja Warrior all-stars from the Japanese and American shows, I programmed my DVR wrong and missed it. Since then, repeats of the special have been pretty hard to find, so tonight's repeat is worth noting.

Teen Wolf (MTV) 10:00 PM ET

So. Wow. The adult Kate de-aged Derek to a teenager — and it looks like she's going to try to rekindle thier old romance? This seems awkward.

Sami and EJ's sure-to-be-crazy wedding starts tomorrow. I'd like to think Days wouldn't leave Will out of that kind of craziness.
