"Mr. Robot" Radical Trans Character, Colbert On Jeb Bush Raffling "Late Show" Tickets: TV ON TAP

BD Wong says TV doesn't usually introduce transgender characters the way "Mr. Robot" introduced Whiterose.

News

As rumored, Hulu announced an "ad-free" tier for an additional four dollars over their "limited commercials" subscription. Seven series will continue to have ads, but those ads will air before and after the show, so even those programs can be watched without an ad break

B.D. Wong talks with Vulture about his role as Mr. Robot's Whiterose. Whiterose is one of TV's standout characters, but Wong wanted to make sure he wouldn't be playing a trans character who lived up to any transphobic stereotypes.  However, it became clear that Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was trying to do something different by introducing a transgender character who isn't explained to the audience as trans. "You very rarely see a transgender actor playing the part of a grocery-store clerk without having to say, 'Oh, look at that trans person.' They aren’t ready for that yet. They don’t think the nation is ready for that yet. Sam said, 'She is transgender, but her transness has nothing to do with anything.' Sam then told me the irony really is that Whiterose is in disguise when Whiterose is a man, and not when Whiterose is a woman"

Jeb! Bush will be one the first guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The Bush campaign foolishly turned it into an opportunity to fund raise (and to build up their mailing list). Colbert is responding by giving a fan a chance to ask Bush a question and turning Bush's appearance into his own fundraiser raffle.

I hope the actual interview with Bush is this funny.

The Daily Show is adding three new correspondents, including Awkward. star Desi Lydic. In Jon Stewart's last few months the correspondent roster was starting to look a bit sparse, I guess they were waiting until the new team arrived.

Skylar Astin and Veronica Mars alum Chris Lowel have joined the cast of EPIX's upcoming political comedy Graves. The series stars Nick Nolte as a former President who decides to try to fix all the problems created by his administration, 20 years after being out of office. Astin will play his eager assistant, while Lowell will play his Afghanistan veteran son.

Samantha Bee's TBS show has a name, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and will debut in January. Here's the newest teaser.

Following that terrible year trying to bring respect back to The View, longtime Rachel Maddow Show producer Bill Wolff will produce Chelsea Handler's upcoming Netflix talk show. That's going to be an interesting mix. Handler has said she wants to do something different from the usual talk show for Netflix, and Wolff has experience with that, as TRMS continues to do that with the cable news format.

Comic fans got some news about Netflix's Luke Cage series, including the addition of Sons of Anarchy hunk Theo Rossi, who will play Cage for Shades, while (relative) newcomer Simone Missick has been picked to play Misty Knight. Additionally, Rosario Dawson will reprise her Daredevil role.
