TV on Tap: NBC Plans Performance Of "The Wiz," Steven Yeun Wishes You Could Binge-Watch "The Walking Dead" And A "Cougar Town" Farewell

News

What is Comedy Central hoping to see with Trevor Noah taking over The Daily Show? Vulture talked with network boss Michele Ganless who noted how much the news media has changed since The Daily Show debuted. "The show was created to be a half-hour comedic answer to the nightly news. And now the news cycle is not a 24-hour new cycle; it’s a 24-second news cycle. The opportunity here, with a change like this, is to evolve the show, and how it lives and breathes on every platform." On one hand, I'm thrilled to hear this is on the mind of the bosses... and yet their replacement for the innovative Colbert Report feels like a slightly-updated version of Politically Incorrect, so I'm a little more wary.

We now know two of the mystery heroes that will be introduced in The CW's upcoming Flash/Arrow spin-off. Broadway star Ciara Renee has been cast as Hawkgirl, a heroine who has lived through many heroic lifetimes. (io9 notes that Smallville featured a Hawkgirl but a different version.) Additionally, Arthur Darvill will play Rip Hunter, the time-traveling adventurer.

Could Downton Abbey have continued after this upcoming, final season? Radio Times says that the production companies behind the hit drama tried to get creator Julian Fellowes to let another writer take over the series as Fellowes moved on to creating another period drama for NBC. Fellowes refused and it's not clear that the cast would have stuck around with another writer.

NBC's next live musical will be a production of The Wiz which will involve Cirque du Soleil's theatrical division. I'm guessing that means the flying monkeys will actually be in the air.

Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams will have a role in the upcoming season of Doctor Who. As usual, they're making us wait to find out what kind of character she will play.

Who knew the iHeartRadio Awards was a place for Jamie Foxx to make transphobic jokes?

Steven Yeun in "The Walking Dead"

Steven Yeun wishes that The Walking Dead episodes were released all at once, " I wish people could binge watch our show, as opposed to waiting week by week. I often feel that’s the reason people are pulled into this weird vortex of 'Who’s gonna die next?' As opposed to just, 'Let me watch this story for what it’s trying to say.'" He also mentions "hope" way too many times to make me feel okay about Glenn surviving much longer.

The fifth season finale of The Walking Dead hit a ratings high for season finale episodes, though the series' most-watched episode is still the season premiere. However, Talking Dead reached a series high.

The idiots on the school board did (another) stupid thing and now gay groups are angry with them. Their answer is to offer Dean Pelton a seat on the board — providing he comes out as a gay to the public so they can use him to calm the controversy.

Fresh Off the Boat (ABC) 8:00 PM ET

The Huangs get a visit from Jessica's college boyfriend Oscar (played by Rex Lee). Unfortunately, Jessica's plans for the visit include getting plenty of flirty attention that makes Louis jealous, except that Jessica doesn't realize Oscar is gay. She needs to go and demand a refund on her gaydar.

The Flash (CW) 8:00 PM ET

Before The Flash debuted, there were things DC comics nerds didn't even know they wanted The Flash gave it to us — a Barry Allen with a wide-eyed view of the world, a show full of callbacks to the short-lived 1990 Flash series or a TV show that regularly referenced the Crisis. Now, we get Mark Hamil reprising his role as The Trickster, a villain he memorably played in the original Flash series. Even better, his plan includes abducting Henry Allen, ensuring he will share screen time with John Wesley Shipp.

Child's Play series creator Don Mancini guest judges tonight's challenge where the artists come up with their own creepy doll characters. No one can be creepier than Talky Tina.

Weird Loners (Fox) 9:30 PM ET

Fox's newest comedy includes Ugly Betty scene-stealer Becki Newton and Happy Endings alum Zachary Knighton as part of a group of dysfunctional 30somethings living together in a Queens townhouse. It seems apt that Knighton and his Happy Endings co-star Elisha Cuthbert would have competing shows in the same time slot. Their Happy Endings characters did have their share of fights.
