Stephen Colbert Returns To Late Night, John Oliver Prompts Miss America Probe, TBS Axes "Nerds": TV ON TAP

We're about to learn what its like when the real Stephen Colbert hosts a late night show.

News

Barry Sonnenfeld has joined Netflix's Series of Unfortunate Events series as showrunner. It's an interesting pick since Sonnenfeld was originally attached when the Lemony Snicket books were being turned into a movie, so this might be where what his vision for the movie would have been. They'd just better get Esmé Squalor's stiletto heels right.

In incredibly disappointing news, TBS has cancelled King of the Nerds. While competitive reality shows have largely felt in a rut, King of the Nerds was able to come up with challenges that were unique and interesting while doing a solid job of celebrating the nerdier parts of pop culture. Where else can you see people riding brooms to throw balls into cauldrons?

Let's remember those we lost in the first season of Scream.

Once again, John Oliver is making change from his HBO desk. Back in September, Last Week Tonight questioned the Miss America foundation's scholarship claims. Now the pageant says it has completed a nine-month review of its scholarship program, promising further investigation and "full transparency" about how its money is spent. Here's the segment again if you want to review LWT's findings:

The Atlantic is calling on NBC to release raw footage of Donald Trump from The Apprentice. After all, a big reason why Trump is seen as a credible candidate is the tightly-edited Apprentice footage meant to make him look like a decisive manager. (And, sadly, Trump's supporters don't seem like the kind of people who realize that what they see on a reality TV show may not be the full story.) If reporters are going to spend hours digging through Hilary Clinton's e-mails, it makes as much sense to dig through unreleased Apprentice footage.

Vulture submits the theory that Review is actually set in purgatory. At the very least, it's an interesting way to explain why no one seems to acknowledge that Forrest hosts a TV show that calls for him to attempt such outrageous stunts.

Fear the Walking Dead debuted with a huge audience if you only count the people who watched the premiere right away, but an additional 3.5 million viewers watched within the next couple of days.

Listings

The Awesomes (Hulu) streaming

Hulu's animated superhero comedy follows a former A-list team of superheroes who go through a membership shake-up that sends them plummeting to the D-list. (Hello comic nerds who miss the hilarious dysfunction of Justice League International.) Last season, team speedster Frantic came out as gay. Tonight, the Awesomes meet up with aquatic hero and undersea king Seaman, along with all the puns you would expect when you meet a Seaman.

The Hotwives of Las Vegas (Hulu) streaming

With tensions still simmering from last week's incident of shade throwing, the Hotwives decide to take a girls' trip to New York — er, the New York, New York Casino, where Denise will finally get to perform her one woman show at any place that has Broadway in the name. As a bonus, Dan Bucatinsky shows up as Jennifer's new decorator.

Face Off (Syfy) 9:00 PM ET

In a tribute to the older styles of theatre, the artists are challenged to turn a male model into a female character out of one of Shakespeare's plays. There had better be a Titania among the potential characters. If any show could use a fairy queen — okay, this is just one of them.

Chopped (Food Network) 10:00 PM ET

As the Teen Tournament continues, the junior chefs have to deal with vegan chicken, okra and packaged cookies. I'm giving that vegan chicken the side-eye from here.

Hollywood Game Night (NBC) 10:00 PM ET

Tonight's show has a Soul Man team-up with Niecy Nash and Cedric the Entertainer. They're joined by Ming-Na Wen, Pete Wentz, Kevin Nealon, and Mel B.

@Midnight with Chris Hardwick (Comedy Central) 11:00 PM ET

For its debut in a new, temporary time slot, James Urbinak (from Difficult People, Review and the voice of Dr. Venture) makes his @Midnight debut. He's joined by Paul F. Tompkins and Andrea Savage.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS) 11:35 PM ET

After a long nine months away, Stephen Colbert finally returns to late night TV to take over The Late Show. While fans have been worried that Colbert's distinct style, web teasers and a cable access gig put them at ease but tonight comes the final answer. The first guests give Colbert a chance to show how he will handle celebrity interviews and politics with George Clooney and Jeb Bush. Chances are good we'll also see a bunch of surprise cameos. Will Jimmy Fallon seek revenge for all those coins Colbert poured on him on Fallon's first Tonight Show?
