TV on Tap: A Major Addition To "The Flash," "Veronica Mars" Could Return As A Limited Series And Why "Hannibal" Wasn't Saved

News

This weekend was Comic-Con and, as usual, there's a lot of news to come out of the Nerd Prom, but Orphan Black's Jordan Gavaris had an amazing comment on media sexism at a panel that it's worth highlighting among the big announcements. Gavaris noted that sexism goes beyond hostile workplaces but in the way the media pushes gender roles. "I think the mythology of the man is just ridiculous, it’s got to stop. And that’s another thing that Hollywood in particular is really bad about exploiting, in terms of sexism. I just think there needs to be more room for all different kinds of men — and not just men! Non-binary genders!"

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas was at Comic-Con to discuss iZombie but he also revealed that he and Kristen Bell have discussed making a Veronica Mars "short-run series". Unfortunately, such a project will have to fit in Thomas and Bell's busy schedules.

Teddy Sears shirtless

Did you hear the screams of a million delighted DC comic fanboys and fangirls this weekend? That's probably because the upcoming season of The Flash will introduce Jay Garrick, the first speedster to fight crime as The Flash. He'll be played by former American Horror Story and Masters of Sex stud Teddy Sears. Garrick will introduce parallel worlds to The Flash, as he'll come from Earth-Two which, if it follows the comics, would be full of different versions of classic heroes. Earth-2's heroes include Alan Scott, the Green Lantern who was rebooted as gay a few years ago, so keep your fingers crossed he's one of the heroes we will meet.

Meanwhile, the Arrow panel revealed that Oliver will get a new costume, one closer to the Green Arrow costume from the comics, Neal McDonough will antagonize Team Arrow as Damien Darhk and the series will get its first gay male hero, with Mr. Terrific, who will also be Felicity's new pal. People are expecting it to be the more recent version of Mr. Terrific, but weren't there hints that the original Terry Sloane was gay? Or am I mixing him up with the original Firebrand, Rod Reilly?

There still isn't a lot to say about the midseason show Legends of Tomorrow but we will meet Hawkman along with Hawkgirl. Considering the tangled origins for the Hawks, they're being daring to say the least.

Peter Facinelli in "Nurse Jackie"

Peter Facinelli

In a final bit of superhero TV show casting, Nurse Jackie cutie Peter Facinelli will join the cast of Supergirl as Maxwell Lord. In the comics, Lord is a frequently-amoral businessman who usually is on the side of heroes. On the show, he'll be dating Supergirl's boss Cat Grant.

The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre says there will not be a spin-off to take advantage of the comedy's success. Usually, I'd question if that attitude will last to the series finale but I don't think any of Lorre's comedies ended and led to a follow-up spin-off.

The fifth season of Arrested Development will begin with a Bluth arrested for murder. The murder victim better be faking their death because that character is too valuable to lose.

Elliott Knight in "Sinbad"

Elliot Knight

Once Upon a Time is headed to Camelot next season. Former Sinbad and How to Get Away with Murder alum Elliot Knight (remember Michela's fiance?) is cast as Merlin.

Bryan Fuller revealed how the attempts to save Hannibal fell apart as Netflix didn't want to produce the fourth season if it couldn't also get the first three (which are streaming on Amazon) and Amazon wanted it on an "impossible" schedule. Still, Fuller promised the characters would return, even if it were only for a film.
