"Twilight" Author Turns Bella Into Beau, Edward Into Edythe For Gender Swapped 10th Anniversary Rewrite

"I’ve always maintained that it would have made no difference if the human were male and vampire female — it’s still the same story."

Stephanie Meyer has decided to reinvent her beloved Twilight in honor of the book's 10th anniversary. And how? She's gender swapping the novel's main characters for the re-release, Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.

Instead of Bella and Edward, the novel presents Beau and Edythe.

In the novel's forward, Meyer writes that she was inspired to write it partially in response to critics calling Bella Swan (famously portrayed by Kristen Stewart in the film version) a damsel in distress.

“My answer to that has always been that Bella is a ‘human in distress,’ a normal human being surrounded on all sides by people who are basically superheroes and villains," the author explains in the book's foreward. "She's also been criticized for being too consumed with her love interest, as if that's somehow just a girl thing. I’ve always maintained that it would have made no difference if the human were male and vampire female — it’s still the same story."

Meyer elaborated on the reinvention during an appearance this morning on Good Morning America, saying “It really is the same story. It’s just a love story. It doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl. It just works out.”
