Twitter Updates Policy Against Abusive Language, Hate Speech

Some of the new rules were created in response to ISIS' large presence on the social media site.

Twitter has announced that it is revising its rules in order to help prevent abusive behavior.

The social media site made it clear that they "embrace and encourage" different opinions and expressions, but they won't "tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another user's voice."

The changes were likely made partly due to the fact that ISIS uses Twitter to spread their hateful messages, and tech companies have received criticism for not doing enough to stop them.

Twitter already had an Abusive Behavior Policy that banned threats of violence and terrorism, and they've simply added to what they will consider problematic.

"You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories."

Twitter previously updated its rules last year to prevent people from posting "revenge porn."
