Uber Fires Driver Who Went Viral for Kicking a Gay Couple Out of Her Car

The company noted it "does not tolerate discrimination in any form."

Uber has banned a driver who kicked a lesbian couple out of her car for being gay in an incident captured on video, which went viral when posted to Facebook.

Kristin Gauthier said she and her girlfriend were in Oaklyn, New Jersey, headed to a concert, when she leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek. The Uber driver saw the peck and pulled over the car, telling them to get out.

"You're together. You're not allowed in my car. I'm not gonna drive you," the driver said, Gauthier told NBC 10.

While her girlfriend quickly exited the car, Gauthier pulled out her phone and began filming, asking, "Are you kicking me out because I'm gay?"

"Yes, I am. Yes," she responded, leading to a back and forth between the two that included the driver putting her hand on Gauthier to push her towards the door. At one point she slaps at the phone.

Uber confirmed on Sunday that the woman was no longer a driver, saying in a statement that it "does not tolerate discrimination in any form and we have been in contact with this rider."

"We removed the driver’s access to the app as soon as we were made aware of this incident," the company added.

"I think everyone is free to their own personal opinions, however, if you are working for a company you must abide by their terms and policy," Gauthier told NJ.com, pointing to Uber's non-discrimination policy. "She should not be doing a job if she cannot abide by the policies."

Gauthier said she is happy with Uber's quick response, as well as the support she has received as a result of posting the video.
