UFC Fighters Exchange Anti-Gay Slurs At Press Conference

The heated moment was caught on video and posted by MMA Fighting.

A pair of UFC fighters got into a heated argument at a news conference promoting UFC 216 on Thursday and both men used the word "faggot" while hurling insults at each other.

Fabricio Werdum interrupted fellow fighter Tony Ferguson as he was answering questions at a media table, which is when he first used the homophobic slur.

"Shut your mouth, you fucking faggot,” Werdum can be heard saying in a mix of Spanish and Portoguese in a video posted by MMA Fighting. "Don’t talk to me like that, that’s not how it works. You can talk like that to your division, but with me you can’t talk like that, faggot."

Werdum eventually was escorted from the table after the men had to be separated, and Ferguson then used the slur while referring to the fight that just went down.

"Obviously, I'm getting to some people," said Ferguson. "Which is good. I told you all, they're not going to like me when I get to this spot." He then motioned toward Werdum and said "este maricon" which translates to "this faggot."

OutSports, which first reported on the incident, pointed out that athletes in most other major sports would be suspended or fined for using this type of language. Instead, the MMA often ignores incidents like this, which is largely to blame for homophobia still running rampant in the sport.
