UK Gymnast Max Whitlock Shows Us How To Master The Pommel Horse

17 days till Rio!

Team GB gymnast Max Whitlock, the first British man to win a World Championship gold medal, is gearing up for the 2016 Olympics in Rio next month.

The 23-year-old Hertfordshire native learned he qualified for the prestigious and much-decorated team last week and showed off his Olympic kit (along with Team GB's divers) on Twitter.

"Absolutely honoured to be picked to represent @TeamGB in Rio Olympic games ????," he wrote.

In January, Whitlock described his love for the Pommel horse — his specialty — in a promotional Gillette World Sport video covering the "road to Rio."

The Pommel horse is "one of the most technically and physically demanding events in gymnastics," according to the video, but Whitlock makes it look easy as he walks the viewer through the breakdown of a routine as it plays out in slow motion.

With each movement, Whitlock and his coach Scott Hann describe the state of mind required to achieve perfection.

"You train so hard for many many years, and all this effort and hard work goes into that one performance on that one day," says Whitlock. "And if you can pull it off, it's an amazing feeling."
