Union J's George Shelley Reveals He's Dated Men In The Past

"I don’t want to be scared anymore."

British boy band Union J has officially broken the golden rule of boy bands — that there is almost always one member who's gay, albeit in the closet or otherwise.

Following in the footsteps of his bandmate Jaymi Hensley, who came out as gay (and taken!) in 2012, 22-year-old George Shelley announced on his YouTube channel yesterday that he has dated both men and women, though he wouldn't call himself bisexual because he thinks labels are outdated.

Shelley said opening up was a New Year's resolution of sorts, and partly in response to recent media speculation about his sexuality. He revealed he recently took a trip to the jungle, which gave him "a lot of time to reflect on what's important to me."

"And what's important to me is that I can be myself," he said. "And I don't feel that I should hide anything.

"I've been on a personal journey and I want you to be part of that journey from now on. I don’t feel that I should hide anything."

Shelley continued:

I’ve been reading a lot of speculation online as to whether I’m straight or gay or bi, and it's all these labels and it’s a little bit old fashioned. This is why I’m not going to label it myself, because it's not something I feel I can label.

I’ve had girlfriends that I’ve loved…but I’ve also had boyfriends. I just want you to know that whether I decide to be with a girl next or be with a guy next, it’s because I love them, and it shouldn't be a big deal.

I don't want to make a big thing out of it when it happens, and I don’t want to be scared anymore. I don’t want to feel like I can't be myself because I’m worried about what somebody might be saying about me or the label, and all that stuff.

I’ve not changed, I’m still me. I'm still the same person I've always been.

I’m just becoming a little bit less scared of being myself, and that makes me quite happy.

And that's all you need to say. Bravo, George!
