Uzo Aduba To Young LGBT Scholars: “Each Of You Is A Member Of My Chosen Family”

The "Orange is the New Black" star and "When We Rise" creator Dustin Lance Black were honored by the Point Foundation.

Celebrities, activists and young people flocked to New York’s Plaza hotel last night, where the Point Foundation was honoring actress Uzo Aduba and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. The evening also paid tribute to the foundation’s new class of LGBT scholarship recipients

Hamilton’s Javier Muñoz introduced Aduba, who received the Point Courage Award for advocating for the future of the LGBT community.

“I want you to know that each of you is a member of my chosen family,” she told the scholarship recipients. “And that every single day—so long as I have breath in my lungs—I chose to fight for your cause, to stand beside you, and serve as a reminder that we see you.”

Thomas Roberts, who received the Point Impact Award, said he wanted younger people to understand “that a successful professional life and a successful personal life [don’t] need to be mutual exclusive.” Our responsibility, said the newsman, is to “show up and remain honest.”

Dustin Lance Black, who was set to receive the Point Leadership Award, was unable to travel from the UK because of “visa regulations which would impact his upcoming marriage to British Olympic diver Tom Daley,” according to a statement. In a taped video message, Black said the foundation was a “safety net to take care of our young people.”

Comedian Emma Willmann hosted the Point Honors New York, which also welcomed Ivory Aquino, Michelle Collins, Gideon Glick, Bob the Drag Queen, Taylor Louderman, Denis O’Hare, Zuri Marley, Ashley Park, Charles Socarides, Valerie Smaldone, Peter Staley, Matthew Breen, Nico Tortorella, and performances by Matt Doyle, and Emily Skeggs.
