Vatican Calls Marriage Equality Victory In Ireland A "Defeat For Humanity"
On Saturday, Ireland voted to legalize marriage for same-sex couples in a landslide victory. And while opponents of the referendum were noble in defeat, the Vatican is calling the referendum "a defeat for humanity."
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, broke the Church's silence on the results Tuesday night. Insisting the Church will respond with renewed evangelization, he told reporters "I believe that we are talking here not just about a defeat for Christian principles but also about a defeat for humanity.”
Reporters also asked the Cardinal about Laurent Stefanini, the openly gay diplomat nominated as France's ambassador to the Vatican.
While Stefanini’s appointment has still not been ratified, Parolin said “dialogue is still ongoing.”
