The Vatican Helped Fund "Rocketman"—Gay Sex and All

And you can tell everybody: The Elton John biopic reportedly got a boost from the notoriously homophobic Catholic institution.

The Elton John musical biopic Rocketman was a sizable, sequined, sexy hit, generating $195 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. A budget that, according to a report in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, included a few holy coins from… The Vatican?

An investigation into the investments of The Vatican's Secretariat of State revealed the office's ties to the Centurion investment fund in Valletta, the capital city of the island of Malta. Apparently, at least two-thirds of the fund's capital comes from the Secretariat, the oldest office in the governing body of the Catholic Church, with holdings in everything from real estate to eyewear to biopics about gay pop icons getting railed by that hot dude from Bodyguard.

Through Centurion, The Vatican invested a cool million into Rocketman, which is a nifty chunk of its overall budget. While the film's historic gay sex scene was censored in some countries, the number-one purveyor of homophobia around the globe played a part in making it happen in the first place.

Irony's fun. Kinda makes you think that maybe the Catholic Church can be a bit… hypocritical. Either that, or no one, not even The Pope, can resist singing along to "Tiny Dancer."
