Vicks Commercial Brings Visibility To India's Transgender Community

"We believe that everyone deserves to feel what it means to be cared for and to care for someone."

Procter & Gamble brand Vicks centers its latest ad campaign around the love between a transgender mother and her adopted daughter.

The video is narrated by the young daughter, Gayatri, who explains how she was orphaned and taken in by her mom, Gauri. She describes all the different ways her mother's cared for her and loved her and how she's encouraged her to be a doctor.

Scenes of the two spending time together watching horror movies and eating their favorite Indian dishes flash by as Gayatri recounts all the sacrifices her mom has made to raise her as her own.

At the end, the focus shifts from the young girl to Gauri and the viewer learns that she's a trans woman. Gayatri then reveals that in spite of her mother's wishes, she wants to become a lawyer so she can fight for her mom's "basic human rights."

“We believe that everyone deserves to feel what it means to be cared for and to care for someone, to experience the difference it makes in your life, to have someone that will unconditionally love you and care for you," Vicks said in a statement.
