Victim Of Bloody Gay-Bashing In Morocco Was Jailed For "Sexual Deviancy"

A petition demanding the man's release has over 80,000 signatures.

Morocco has released one victim of a homophobic assault carried out by a street mob that broke into his house in July, brutally beating and stabbing him and his boyfriend after the couple were convicted of homosexuality.

Homosexuality is a crime punishable by up to three years in jail in Morocco.

In August, the AFP reported that video of both bloody men fleeing their home and trying to seek shelter was posted on social media, and helped officials in convicting two assailants.

According to Gay Star News, the video "showed the two victims naked, scared, covered in blood and being beaten and kicked," adding that "homophobic slurs can be heard" as the couple was dragged outside.

The men were assaulted by a "crowd of angry youths" after being publicly outed by police — one served time for "acts of sexual deviancy with a person of the same sex," while the other received a suspended sentence for "sexual deviancy."

For the attack, one assailant received a six-month prison sentence while another was handed a four month sentence for "forced entry, resorting to violence and carrying weapons."

Gay Star News reports both victims are now out of jail. Aside from one man who was released on appeal this week, one was released after serving 26 days in prison.

Although unconfirmed, the man's release may have been influenced by a petition started by the international advocacy group All Out, which garnered over 80,000 signatures demanding the men's release.

The petition was reportedly delivered to Morocco's Minister of Justice on Friday.
